I only discovered hot holiday drinks a few years ago. I had a tepid appreciation in the beginning. A cold had taken over my body, and my friends insisted I still join them for a night of drinking (yay to peer pressure). When we arrived at the bar, an empathetic pal ordered a piping hot glass of hot toddy for me, and it was a life-saving drink that carried me through the night. I discovered hot buttered rum and fell in love with its spicy, and creamy profile. I learned that hot buttered rum can be recreated at home with a butter mix recipe.
The mix below is something I've adapted and tweaked over a few times of making the hot buttered rum batter. It's the result of occasions that I have had to substitute some spices and discovered I like the altered version better. The flexibility of a hot buttered rum mix recipe is one of the reasons I like making this in the winter.
Customizing the Hot Buttered Rum Drink Mix Recipe
You can easily adjust the recipe based on what's available in your pantry. While cinnamon is a must, I recommend using at least three holiday spices from the list below:
- nutmeg
- cardamom
- cloves
- allspice
- ginger
Take care using ginger and cardamom, which can easily dominate the other spices you put in the batter. Make sure to save some cinnamon or nutmeg for garnishing as well.
A Great Dinner Party Idea
Making this hot buttered rum mix ahead of time will also save you during those rushed holiday dinners. Set up a bar where people can assemble their own drinks and plunk down a container of hot buttered rum drink mix in the middle, next to an electronic water kettle. Mixing spoonfuls of hot buttered rum batter with hot water is an effortless feat. Guests will be more than happy to preoccupy themselves with making this drink and they will appreciate the interactive activity.
Make A Creamy Hot Buttered Rum Drink
Another versatile element to the hot buttered rum drink mix is that you can also add melted vanilla ice cream to the batter. This will result in a creamier body, but you should use this ice cream rendition in one night since it won't keep as well in the fridge.
The Best Rum For Hot Buttered Rum
I have used a wide range of dark types of rum to make this tasty hot buttered drink. Below are some brands I have used with my homemade mix:
- Kraken
- Sailor Jerry
- Captain Morgan
- Jamaica Cove
Ensure that the rum label says "dark," and there are no fruits or added flavor to the bottle. This will guarantee that your drink mix won't be overpowered by other flavors, and you maintain that creamy essence of butter.
As a luscious drink full of butter and rum, I suggest saving this drink mix recipe only for the holiday season. It's an indulgent treat you deserve to have for working hard all year! And if you still want to drink something easy and just as delicious, try making yourself this Aperol spritz. Cheers!
